Tropical Storm Matthew, Art in the Park and general fun in Belize

Today I am spending the day preparing for tropical storm Matthew.  It is headed straight for Belize and may become a hurricane by the time it gets to us.  I hope it stays as a tropical storm but either way being prepared is the best route.  Even tropical storms do enough damage around here.  It’s been raining pretty steadily since I’ve arrived in Belize so everything is already a little soggy which means the already bumpy roads are really sloppy.  So I’m in Corozal with my boyfriend getting groceries, candles and batteries for the weekend.  At this point it looks like the storm will mellow out before it hits Belize and just dump a lot of rain on us all.  So we will see what happens…I will let you all know how that turns out over the weekend.

In the meantime we had a fun night last week at the one year anniversary of Corozal’s Art in the Park.  The event takes place once every month and brings together local artists to sell their crafts.  Usually there is live music going and a lively atmosphere.  I was at the first Art in the Park event and it sure has grown.  The park was absolutely packed with a great band playing and there was a wide variety of craft booths to look at.  This event has turned out to be a wonderful addition to Corozal’s available cultural activities and my hats off to the group who started the whole thing.

Art in the Park, CorozalArt in the Park, CorozalAfter Art in the Park we headed to a friend’s birthday party.  He was doing things a little different and had spent the entire day cooking for all his friends and family.  He spent most of the time working at his party – I’m used to the tradition being other people take care of the birthday boy/girl but everyone else had a great time and he seemed to really enjoy putting it all together.  We didn’t stay long; I had been up since 3:30am that morning, the music was really loud and my feet were being attacked by sand fleas.  I stayed long enough to say hi and have a bite to eat, then it was off to bed.  We walked back to my mom’s house in Corozal and by the time we made it there I was exhausted.

The next day we spent the afternoon at Cerros Beach Resort with a bunch of very cute kids.  We swam, ate ceviche and even saw a green tree snake.  It was an exhausting couple of days but a great time for everyone.
