Volunteer Vets Help Local Corozal Animals

Vet volunteers in CorozalOne of the most obvious problems you witness when moving to or traveling to Belize are the stray animals.  Many of them are in very sad states and it can be a shocking scene for many people coming to Belize from more developed countries.  There are some organizations located in Belize who try and help this problem.  One such organizations is P.A.W. (Protecting Animal Welfare) founded by Madi Collins.  Today helped coordinate volunteers who came to Corozal to vaccinate, spay and neuter some of the local animals from noon to 5pm at the Civic Center in town.  I walked over and spoke with one of the volunteers who told me that Angela Cherry with Helping Paws Across Borders and Madi Collins were working with volunteer vets and vet techs from the United States were in town trying to help the animals in Corozal.

Volunteer vets in Corozal BelizeSo we took Coffee down to the action and got her a shot and invited the crew to come by Scotty’s for a drink afterwards – they looked like they had been working extremely hard.  Helping Paws Across Borders gathers their supplies through donation and if are interested in donating to their program or to P.A.W. please visit the links above.  Unfortunately we learned that the government of Belize was making it very difficult for the group to stay in Belize and help because of their insistence that duty should be paid on the donated supplies that were brought in.  They had planned to stay through the week but instead they will pack up and go over the border to Chetumal, Mexico and help there.  This is a much needed and outstanding service that Helping Paws Across Borders was willing to perform and it is frustrating that the government is causing them enough difficulty that they have to move onto another country were their help will be welcome.

Again if you would like to donate to either organization please visit P.A.W. or find Angela’s information here to donate to Helping Paws Across Borders.

Hello, My orginization Helping Paws Across Borders was so happy to be able to help the wonderful people and animals of Corozal Belize. We did not know what to expect upon arrival but the generosity and compassion of the local people for their animals was truely overwhelming. I am already planning a return trip to Corozal (if they will have us). The kindness of the local Corozal government was incredible. They supplied us with a fantastic area to set up for surgery gave us food and drink and were available to help us with everything we needed. It just does not get any better than that.
Thanks to all of you for allowing us to help with your pets
p.s. We are going to try and learn a little more spanish before we return;)

Hi, I’m one of those volunteer “techs” and i just wanted to say that I enjoyed helping the local pets and hope to be able to return at some future date. I also agree with Angie about learning more spanish before we return. I wish all of the locals and their beloved pets the best!

Hi, thank you so much for the offer for drinks after the clinic unfortunately it was a little late, the gang was so tired and we had to head out to our next stop. We will take you up on that offer next time. lol

Angie and her group rocked!!! Thank you guys!

I am so happy they accepted my invitation to come help the animals. I am looking forward to many more clinics such as these with Angie and her group.

I also want to thank Mr. Willie Cruz for accepting my offer to come help the animals of Corozal. He really made us feel welcome and took great care of all of us.

A special thanks goes out to Veterinarian Martha Mena for her time spent helping us on May 9th.

Together everything is possible, the animals are worth this and more!
