May 30th: Belize transportation industry halts

Last week Belize’s transportation industry was immobile when members of the Belize Bus Owners Cooperative staged a protest shutting down two major highways.  The protests were held over frustrations of new daily runs granted by the Ministry of Transport to the West Line Company owned by Sergio Chuc.  After a Sunday meeting to discuss the bus runs in the Northern Zone it seems there is still dissention.

May 30th: Lack of start-up funds and sponsorship threaten September Carnival

Carnival is an integral part of Belize September Celebrations but this year Carnival bands are looking at financial trouble that may jeopardize their participation.

May 31st: Coalition to Save our Natural Heritage achieves 17,000 signatures

The Coalition to Save our Natural Heritage reached their goal of 17,000 signatures that Prime Minister Dean Barrow said was necessary for him to entertain the idea of an offshore drilling referendum.

June 1st: Uncertainty in Belize’s citrus industry

The Belize Citrus Growers Association says that CEO of the Citrus Products of Belize Limited Dr. Henry Canton has drafted a plan to close down one of two processing facilities that would result in the loss of over 100 jobs.

June 2nd: Belize Coast Guard received $300,000 donation from US

In order to try and curb narcotics-trafficking the US donated $300,000 worth of equipment and materials to the Belize Coast Guard to aid in their fight against this rising problem.

June 2nd: Butane importers want a huge price increase and now threaten strike

As a result of scandal in the Belize butane industry, a new law came into effect requiring the use of scales.  Many companies are still non-compliant, importers want an increase in price that would be crippling to the consumers and now threaten strike.

June 3rd: BEL owes Mexico millions: possible blackout?

Belize Electricity Limited is asking the government for a bail-out.  They owe Mexico millions for electricity use and now face countrywide blackouts.
