Prime Minister Dean Barrow speaks about his plans for a new, get-tough-on-crime initiative. He discusses preventative detention, jury by judge and the death penalty.
April 11th: Salvador’s Foreign Minister Visits Belize
El Salvador’s Foreign Minister His Excellency Hugo Roger Martinez Bonilla met with Prime Minister Dean Barrow last week making this the first ever such visit. Bilateral cooperation in trade between El Salvador and Belize, a scholarship system and cooperation in agriculture was discussed.
April 12th: Window tinting restrictions to be put in place
New restrictions on auto window tinting in Belize will be put in place later this year. These restrictions are meant to stop criminals from concealing themselves behind heavily tinted windows.
April 12th: Belize students voice their opinions about the country’s increased crime and violence
University students in Belize will engage in a peaceful movement to voice their opinions about how the increased crime and violence in Belize is affecting them.

April 12th: Training medical practitioners on caring for human trafficking victims
Workshops have begun in Belize to train medical practitioners on how to care for human trafficking victims. The “Caring for Trafficked Persons” guidebook is being piloted in Belize to aid in the training.
April 12th: Discussion of Belize crime fighting initiatives
Belize’s current government is taking action on the increased crime in Belize. New laws on preventative detention, jury-by-judge, regulations on tinting vehicles and hiring outside of the country for police commissioner have started to be put in to place. April 13th: US Fugitive caught in Belize
Thomas A. Donahue, wanted by the FBI for producing and distributing child pornography, was caught this week in Corozal Town.

April 15th: Literacy Program
A voluntary organization made up of young people who carry out community service orientated projects recently hosted a story writing competition to help advance literacy.
